Week beginning 23rd November

We are starting some phase 1 phonics this week.

Group 1 are going to be focusing on environmental sounds. We will be hiding different items that make a noise (keys, crisp packets, bells, toys, water bottle) in a box. The children have to guess which items are making the noise. We will be discussing our favourite sounds and which sounds we don’t like. We will be making shakers using socks and different objects such as coins, stones, etc and listening to the noises they make.

Group 2 are going to be focusing on musical instruments sound. We will be learning the name of the instrument and identifying the different sounds. We will be exploring instruments such as xylophone, cymbals, triangles, drums. If you don’t have musical instruments at home, you could use this video.

We will be playing guess the instrument – children having to match the instrument to the sound they hear. We will be using the instruments in a musical show and tell and singing our favourite nursery rhymes.

We are continuing our Transport topic this week.

We will be looking at flying machines. We will be learning about different machines that can fly and how they operate. We will be learning facts about how they fly. The children want to make parachutes this week so we will be experimenting with different materials to make our own parachutes. We will test these out in the nursery garden. We will be making paper aeroplanes using folding techniques and seeing how far they can fly.

Our Favourite Five stories this half term are Where the Wild Things Are, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Funnybones, The Snail and the Whale and The Gruffalo.

This week’s story is The Gruffalo.

We will be making Gruffalos using different materials. We will be adding purple prickles to the Gruffalos back using our fine motor skills.

Our Favourite Five nursery rhymes this half term are I’m a little teapot, Incy Wincy Spider, Jack and Jill, Little Bo Peep and Little Miss Muffett.

This week’s focus is Little Bo Peep.

We will be learning the rhyme and then having a go at making Bo Peep’s sheep. What materials are best to use? Children will have templates to help them and be using materials such as cotton wool to make the sheep.

Week beginning 9th November

This week’s BLAST focus is memory and concentration. We will be using simple flash cards with the children and seeing if they can remember what they are once they have been turned over.

You could do this with different picture cards in the house. Choose 2/3 cards – name them to the child e.g. apple, banana. Once the child has had chance to look at the cards – turn them over – point to each card – can the child remember what they were?

We are continuing our Transport topic this week.

We will be looking at buses! We have a story called The Naughty Bus which we are going to be reading and finding out what the Naughty Bus gets up to.

This is a fantastic interactive retelling of the Naughty Bus.

We will be making our own buses in the creative area using shapes. We will be taking our very own naughty bus out on an adventure in the Nursery garden.

Our shape of the week this week is the triangle.

We will be recapping the circle shape and introducing the triangle. We will be looking at the properties of the triangle and if we can find any everyday objects that are triangular in shape.

This week’s BLAST focus is comprehension of sentences focusing on two important pieces of information and big and little.

The children need to be able to follow instructions that have two key words. This could be “get the pen and the block” or “Put the shoes in the bag”. E.g. “Can you get the big trainers” “Can you get the little slippers”.

This week we are starting a new topic – Transport. We are going to start by looking at the different types of transport there are and what our favourite modes of transport are.

We will then look at the different ways we travel to school – does anyone come in the car or on the bus? Has anyone been on the train or the metro before? Where did you go?

Our number of the week this week is number 3.

We are going to start with these Numberblocks episodes as a stimulus.

This week’s BLAST focus is listening to instructions and environmental sounds. The environmental sounds we are looking at this week are animal sounds.

The listening activity is focused around action words. Can they copy the actions – blink, wink, smile, nod, wiggle, yawn, point, jump, hop, frown?

As the week continues, you start adding a phrase for the children to complete rather than single words – touch your toes, fold your arms, cross your legs, etc?

Can the children follow the instruction?

This week we are continuing with the story The Perfect Sofa. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ72hMKA6Tc Here is a video of the story if you don’t have a copy yourself.

In the story, Panda and Penguin go sofa shopping and find sofas that are too big or too small! We are going to look at size and sort objects into big or small.

You could start with an empty cardboard box and decide what items in your house would fit in the cardboard box and which items would be too big for that box.

Week beginning 21st September

Hello and welcome to Farringdon Nursery! This week we are still settling in our new children and welcoming more new starters to Nursery.

We have had a fantastic start last week and it is lovely to see so many happy children enjoying our nursery environment once again.

We are continuing with settling in activities this week and becoming familiar with our indoor and outdoor environment.

Our Nursery staff are:

Miss Richardson – Nursery Teacher

Mrs Green – Teaching assistant

Mrs Charlton – Teaching assistant

If you are working from home this week, you can talk to your grown up about your favourite area to choose in nursery. Do you like to build in construction or lego? Or make the tea in the home corner?

We are going to be practicing our counting up to 10 this week. If you are working from home, you could try doing this with your grown up. There is a song on Youtube that we love with our friend zero super hero!

You could go on a number hunt and look for numbers around your house or even on a local walk! Numbers are everywhere. What number house do you live in? What number bus do you get on?

We like to sing lots of songs in nursery. Our nursery rhyme this week is going to be 5 Currant Buns. You can sing this with your grown up or find the song on Youtube.
