Spring Term 2018
Year 4 have had an exciting Spring Term so far!
We visited the oldest church in England- St Peter’s in Monkwearmouth.
We dressed as monks, learned about the symbols in the stained glass windows, completed a timeline and ended with a performance using handbells in front of the altar!
Our Homework Project was to research the bridges built across the River Wear and to make a model or drawing of our chosen bridge. What wonderful models we came up with here are some of them.
We have been watching the progress of the construction of the Northern Spire bridge from Pallion to Castletown.
We were lucky enough to go and visit the site and take part in a workshop to find out more.
We took Edward’s model with us and the builders were very impressed!
We braved a football match in the snow!
Autumn Term 2017
Our Year 4 classes have enjoyed exploring our Viking topic so far this year. We are enjoying our class novel ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, and have been using it to inspire our creative writing, with some incredible fantasy tales from the children involving a range of exotic creatures, characters and settings.
We have particularly enjoyed discovering about Anglo-Saxon and Viking crime and punishment, and the payment of fines when enemies were injured. We have enjoyed calculating how many shillings of a fine you would receive for chopping off different amounts of hands, noses, feet and fingers!
Meanwhile, Year 4 have also enjoyed learning and writing Viking songs, poetry and kennings, and we are discovering the history of Viking life through epic story telling.
In P.E., the children have enjoyed attending a Hockey Challenge event at the academy, with some great photographs!
