Spellings will be given out each Friday for the children to learn over the weekend for a test on the following Friday. We are grateful for any times you can spend helping your child learn their spelling words.
Mental maths tests will be conducted once a week. If parents can continue practicing times tables and addition and subtraction calculations with their child, it would be appreciated.
Maths and Literacy homework will be given on Friday to be returned no later than Wednesday. Any children who do not return their homework on time will ‘catch up’ on Friday afternoon at the beginning of ‘Golden Time’ Please ensure you child completes and returns this homework promptly to help their learning.
PE will be on Monday afternoon, Children will be expected to have their full school PE kits (red shorts, white t shirt, grey or black, plain sweat-pants, training shoes). It is advised that PE kits come in on a Monday and are left for the duration of the week as other opportunities for sport may arise.
Swimming classes are held on Monday afternoons however the sessions are shared across upper KS2 so children will be informed which weeks they will attend.
In the first week of term the children in year five studied the story ‘George’s marvellous medicine’. We linked our learning to the story and use our skills of measuring capacity to create our own marvellous medicine. In literacy the children wrote their own instructions on how to make a marvellous medicine.
The children are currently learning about space and our solar system. They have researched the planets in our solar system and created reports on the interesting facts they found. As well as that the children have been learning the key events in the space race. In particular the first man to walk on the moon. The children have reviewed evidence from opposing views relating to the moon landing and used this evidence to support their own ideas.
During our last half term we continued our learning on the topic space. The children really enjoyed this topic and where fascinated by scientific developments related to space travel. At end our Autumn topic, Year 5 visited The Great North Museum in Gateshead. Where they experienced two shows in the planetarium. These fantastic shows took children on a journey through space. The children showed lots of passion towards the topic and with brilliant support from parents and careers the children produced some amazing pieces of home project work, including models, research, writing and artwork.
Our new topic for Spring term is South America.
