This term our topic was ‘Where in the world’

We started with our local area and looked at local landmarks such as Penshaw Monument, Roker Lighthouse, The Spire bridge and The Angel of the North.

We enjoyed talking to our friends about the landmarks we ad visited with our families.

We then moved to Africa, China and the South Pole. Very different to Sunderland.

We enjoyed the story Handas Surprise where we got to feel what life was like in Kenya. We looked at how different their country is to our country and what things were similar. We particularly enjoyed performing our African dancing and dressing up.

We enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year.

We learnt many new facts and enjoyed making lanterns and dragons. We also enjoyed singing Gung Hay Fat Choi and dancing with the dragon.

We then finished in the South Pole. We read the story Lost and Found which took us on a chilly journey to the South Pole. We designed our own boats to see if they would float and would they get us to the South Pole.

In math’s we have been learning different compositions to 5. We also looked at equal and unequal amounts before moving onto comparing mass. We have enjoyed weighing different objects and really enjoyed capacity.

The children have had a fantastic half term and have worked very hard. They are now ready to enjoy their half term break and recharge ready for Spring term 2.

Have a lovely break.

This term our topic was ‘Celebrations’ The children enjoyed learning about Guy Fawkes, Remembrance Day, Diwali and why we celebrate Christmas.

We created firework art inspired by Jackson Pollock. We also enjoyed learning about Guy Fawkes and drew portraits of him. We danced and dressed up to celebrate Diwali and we made poppies to remember the people who had fought and are still fighting for our country.

In math’s we have been counting up to 10. 20, 30, 40 and 50. We have been looking at 1 more and 1 less than a number and also comparing numbers. We have looked at 2D and 3D shapes and sorted, described and made models and patterns from them.

In phonics we have been learning lots of new sounds and some children have started putting words together with letter tiles. We have been practicing our letter formation and writing our names. Our blending is improving every week and some children are now spelling simple words and writing sentences.

This term our topic started out as ‘All About Me’. The children enjoyed talking about their families, pets and hobbies and used their creative skills to draw their families, pets and their family homes. The children were very excited to talk about what they wanted to be when they grow up. We have some future doctors, nurses, teachers, window cleaners, vets and baby sitters in the making.

In math’s we have been counting up to 10. 20, 30, 40 and 50. We have been counting objects, actions and sounds. We have compared size and numbers and are ending half term by learning to add/say what 1 more than a number/amount is.

We share our weekend news on a Monday and because so many children had visited leafy parks and forests and because of sharing their love for our daily ‘Favourite Five’ stories such as Owl Babies and The Gruffalo we followed the children’s interests and took our topic ‘Into the Woods’.

We have enjoyed using our creative skills to make woodland animals from different materials. We enjoyed a nature walk collecting natural materials to make a nest for the owl babies.

We have had a great start to out reception year, the children have settled very well and have worked so hard. I hope everyone enjoys the half term break and look forward to hearing what everyone has been up to when we return.
