Welcome to our class learning page. We hope you enjoy seeing what we are learning in school.

Year 1 End of Autumn 2 Term Class Blog

Well done to the children for all their hard work and enthusiasm over this term. As always, they have risen to the challenge and continue to make us very proud.

Subjects covered: English, Maths, Geography, Science, D.T., Music, R.E, RSHE and PSHE and P.E.

In science, we were looking at materials. The children studied objects, and learned about the properties that the objects were made from. They learned how to carry out a scientific investigation and record the results.

Reading every day is extremely important for us in Year 1 and the children have obviously been working hard at school and at home this term. They are working on Set 1, 2 and 3 sounds already and we are beginning to see some wonderful progress in their fluency. Keep up the good work at home!

In maths, the children have been learning to count to 100, counting in twos to 20 and tens to 100. They practise writing their numbers daily in digits and words. They are learning to recognise mathematical symbols and use them accurately. A target for year one is to be able to count in 2,s 5’s and 10’s speedily. This would be an ideal opportunity for all the children to practise whenever they can.

Geography has been all about the United Kingdom. The children explored the different countries and learned how to use a map and compass to help find routes. Next, they studied the flags of the countries within the UK and enjoyed researching the famous emblems.

In P.E. lessons we develop basic skills, jumping, skipping and throwing. They also developed hand/eye control and co-ordination.

In D.T. we were learning about fruit and vegetables. We sampled different smoothies and designed our own fruit/vegetable smoothie. We used tools to cut the fruit and blended them together to make our own delicious smoothie.

In R.E. we have studied the religion of Christianity, this term. We learnt that Christians believe in Jesus and we read and sequenced The Christmas Story.

During RSHE and PSHE lessons we have been following the journey of Yasmin and Tom. We talked about different types of families and situations and linked this with talking about feelings and how to name them. We thought about changes that can happen and what we could do to make ourselves feel better if we feel unhappy. In Music we have begun looking at how to find a beat and the children have been enjoying singing along and clapping out different rhythms.

Well done to all the children this term! They have had a fabulous start to their Key Stage One education and have adjusted really well to the transition from Early Years! The children have worked exceptionally hard and are a credit to you all.

In Autumn One the children studied: English, Maths, History, Science, Art, DT, Music, R.E, RSHE and PSHE and P.E.

In science, the children studied animals including humans, and discussed similarities and differences in structure and naming different parts of the body. We also investigated our senses and explored how they are important to our daily lives.

In maths, the children have practised rote counting to 20 and beyond, with specific reference to the teen numbers. They practise writing their numbers daily in digits and words. They are beginning to recognise and apply mathematical symbols. The children should continue to practise recognising and writing numbers to 5, then 10, then 20, and beyond. They should also begin to count in 2’s to 20.

History has been all about Queen Elizabeth ll and the children have thoroughly enjoyed this subject. They have found out lots of information about The Royal Family including traditions and beliefs. They have learnt new vocabulary and can tell you all about what a Monarch is or why we are part of the Commonwealth.

Our P.E. lessons were all about the basics, we have practised running, jumping, hopping and catching. The children also practised hand/eye co ordination using balloons.

In art,  the children learnt how to sketch a self-portrait using correct proportions and how to create contours using cross-hatching techniques.  Finally they painted a background for their own portrait.  Here are just a selection of their stunning pieces of work

R.E. has been another subject, that the children thoroughly enjoyed learning about. They have studied the Christian faith and the story of The Creation.

In our Design Technology lessons we learnt all about fruit and vegetables. We know how to tell the difference and we tasted lots of new flavours. Once we decided on our favourite fruits and vegetables, we bought ingredients so that we could make our own smoothie. I am sure the children would love to continue their ideas at home over the half-term break.

During RSHE and PSHE lessons we have been following the journey of Yasmin and Tom. We talked about different types of families and situations and linked this with talking about feelings and how to name them. We thought about changes that can happen and what we could do to make ourselves feel better if we feel unhappy.

We hope you all enjoy a well-deserved break and
