Year 4S – Autumn Term 1
It has been lovely to see the children back in school this term after their well-deserved Summer break. The children have covered a wide range of subjects and topics.
During maths the children have been learning to add and subtract 4-digit numbers with both no exchange and exchange. The children had remembered a great deal from last year about how to set out written method and their excellent rapid recall and place value has really helped with their understanding and progress. Additionally, the children have been comparing and classifying angles aswell as 2D shapes. The children did find this math topic challenging at times but with their excellent resilience, they have a great understanding. Well done! Furthermore, the children have been learning to tell the time, both analogue and digital and they have been doing great. Keep practising this skill and looking around your environment to consolidate this knowledge and you will get better and better.
In Literacy the children have written a setting narrative aswell as a newspapers report. The children have used ‘The Whale’ by Vita Murrow in inspire their writing and have absolutely loved getting involved in the role of the reporter. The children have used ‘fronted adverbials, direct speech, prepositions and expanded noun phrases and it has been lovely watching the children able to find their own errors in their writing and edit it themselves. You are all getting so much better at this skill.
In History the children have been learning about the Romans Empire. The children are able to label a timeline with key dates in the history of the Roman Empire for example when Britain was conquered by Roman, when Pompeii erupted aswell as when the Colosseum was built. The children have used maps to investigate how far the Roman Empire spread aswell as where the Hadrian Wall started and finished. Furthermore, the children enjoyed learning what the Colosseum was and why people enjoyed watching events at the Colosseum. The children wrote some excellent postcard, where they pretended to travel back in time and experience a brutal flight between a gladiator and a wild animal. Finally, the children enjoying watching an animation of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii erupting. The children have written an excellent diary entry to express their understand of what happened during the eruption and how the Romans would have felt during the time.
In Science this term the children have been exploring ‘State of Matter’. The children have been comparing and grouping materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases. They have observed materials changing state when they are heated or cooled. Additionally, the children have learning how evaporation and condensation play an important part of the water cycle.
Children in year 4 have also taken part in Music, R.E, P.E, and PSHE lessons. The children have absolutely loved trying to learn a rap aswell as giggling at Mrs Roberts trying to rap herself. In R.E the children have been exploring how important is it for Jewish people to do what God asks them to do. During P.E the children have been learning the skill for field hockey. The children are now aware how to hold a hockey stick correct, pass, hit and how to tackle. You’ve have all been amazing during P.E and your listening skills have been brilliant. Well done everyone. Finally, during PSHE the children have been learning about good and not so good feeling. To consider what positively and negatively effects their physical, method and emotional health. Furthermore, in PSHE the children have learnt how their body will, and their emotions may change as they approach and move through/towards puberty. Finally, the children have learning how to make informed choices and are beginning to understand the concept of a ‘balanced lifestyle’.
